Rain showers my spirit
and waters my soul.~ Emily Logan Decens
The rain clouds have been generous this week, bringing us some much needed water for the earth, the trees, and the pond. I’ve never seen the pond as low as it was when we arrived home on Monday.
I briefly wondered what the fish were thinking about the drought. Were they worried about their neighborhood shrinking and becoming overcrowded? Were they discussing this lack of rainfall and the evaporation of the water as signs of global warming? Did they see the grass at the edges, grass that was never there before, as some sort of sign of the apocalypse? Or perhaps an enemy encroaching on their world and way of life? Were they gearing up for war? Do you suppose the blue gills were blaming the bass for their smaller world? Or were they all blaming the carp?
Probably none of the above. They probably went about their fish lives, swimming, eating, living, and dying as usual.
It’s a good thing I didn’t start wondering about the tadpoles, frogs, snakes, and turtles who live out there with the blue gills, carp, and bass. People might question my sanity.
The rains brought the great blue heron back to the pond. It was good to see him again. He’s almost like a part of the pond for me now. It seems empty when he doesn’t come to visit and feed.
After the rains, we now have a glorious day. Clear skies, sunny and bright, low humidity, and hot air balloons flying overhead. It’s nice to once again be able to throw open the windows to enjoy the fresh air and the sounds of nature. And the sounds of the hot air balloons which, in my opinion, is so much better than the sounds of traffic we lived with in our apartment in Sabbaticalville.

My mind astounds me. I thought I’d commented here. I can’t remember what I thought I’d said. I guess I didn’t say anything.
I wonder about fish. There is a small fish that lives in our house. I’m quite fond of it. It isn’t cuddly but I like it anyway. It doesn’t say anything. It isn’t in a very big tank. I don’t think it minds but I do wonder.
It’s been raining here for a week, typhoons and such. I’d like a glorious day, a little sunshine, and a walk without an umbrella.
It’s good to be home, eh?
We’ve hardly had any rain this summer. This weekend we had a few rainstorms and it was splendid. After not hearing the rain outside for so long I was grateful for the sound of water and thunder in the distance and watching the beauty of lightening. My grass is green again and that makes me happy. It’s sad when we need an absence of something in order to see the beauty in having it.
I don’t know what it is, but I love this photo.
It involves all the senses, some how. The moon picture has been my favorite for a long time, but this picture… there’s something very tactile about it: The rain.
……………..
Showed my mom and step dad and he said the composition was remarkable. I don’t know a lot about photography, but as I look, I see what he is saying. It is a streak of color and a streak of color and a streak of color, with the light playing on the water, and the rain coming across at an angle so the balance with the heron off-center…
Wow.
Thanks, amuirin. This is my new favorite photo. I like how the rain is visible, something I don’t usually achieve when taking photos in the rain. Plus I really like herons and watching them fish in the pond.
there are blue herons in maryland, and if you ever see one, pull over and fish next to them, they don’t freak all that easily, if you approach correctly
and being i manage a couple ponds, the bluegills are the only ones fretting, the other fish just go on with their lives, all the way up till there is practically no water, it is natural to them, i think
biblio said i learned to behave on the net, hope you enjoy the comments, been wanting to post some things here
Fishy: You’re welcome to post comments any time. I didn’t mean to chase you off the first time you stopped by.
no, no, no, it was me. i am more of a face to face person. i take the blame, but enough about that, keep the pictures coming, can’t believe you’ve been to Ocean City! that is too funny.
i was fishing in mexico once and we were looking all over for herons, i didn’t know why, i thought we were bass fishing, but then i was like, ohhhhh…..i see
