Rivers

Many a time have I merely closed my eyes at the end of yet another troublesome day and soaked my bruised psyche in wild water, rivers remembered and rivers imagined.  Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadows, rivers that have eroded down deep into the mountain’s belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet’s history exposing the texture of time itself.

To see a mountain

It does not require a large eye to see a large mountain.  The reason is that, though the eye is small, the soul which sees through it is greater and vaster than all the things which it perceives.  In fact, it is so great that it includes all objects, however large or numerous, within itself.  For it is not so much that you are within the cosmos as that the cosmos is within you.

The art of being happy

(Terraces.)

The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things.

If you subscribe to Bountiful Healing, you have probably noticed the occasional flurry of activity regarding new posts that turn out to be old posts.  A while back I switched most of my posts to private for a variety of reasons.  I’m slowly bringing them back as public posts which is what causes you to get the email notification of a new (old) post.

My apologies if the notifications become too much.  I’ve been limiting them to a few at a time and not too many each week so hopefully it won’t be too much of a bother.

If we are not attached to outcomes then we will not suffer from the pain of fallen expectations.

Whirling and flowing

Nature is ever at work building and pulling down, creating and destroying, keeping everything whirling and flowing, allowing no rest but in rhythmical motion, chasing everything in endless song out of one beautiful form into another.

~ John Muir

Change

Change is a measure of time and, in the autumn, time seems speeded up.  What was is not and never again will be; what is is change.

(Looking into the eye of a horse.)

A lovely horse is always an experience…  It is an emotional experience of the kind that is spoiled by words.

Wave on stone

There is a language older by far and deeper than words.  It is the language of bodies, of body on body, wind on snow, rain on trees, wave on stone.  It is the language of dream, gesture, symbol, memory.  We have forgotten this language.  We do not even remember that it exists.

~ Derrick Jensen

Under the willow

The foliage has been losing its freshness through the month of August, and here and there a yellow leaf shows itself like the first gray hair admist the locks of a beauty who has seen one season too many.

~ Oliver Wendell Holmes
