an afternoon walk
on the beach at Assateague
a girl watches waves
icebound on the shore
winter gathers round itself
blackbirds swell and rise
a day
immersed in local politics
and global affairs
of the heart
that change
when hands are grasped by greed
that swallows neighbors wholegravity pulls
the weariness
down into the soles
and I look
for a place to rest
the eyes that want to sleep
in hope
sunflower’s morning glory shines
as autumn sneaks in on mushroom feet
and summer, determined to hold fast
spills over the garden fence
Another snow day
drifting and blowing
winter world in black and white
cold knocks on the door
silent as the grave
the master of languages
rests his springtime voice
hanging out the wash
sunlight playing hide and seek
birds building spring nests
no pen, no paper
just eyes and ears wide open
the Heron approves
in the forest
on an autumn day
a wind-driven magic carpet of
orange, yellow, red leaves fly
float
drift
swoop
down to earth
an immigration of sky spirits
populating the pathways
a whoosh of heat
as the house clicks and rattles
the season’s first frost
